ARTUS

Digital Underground (working title) has been in production since 1990. It is a retrospective look at the growth and development of electronic music, rave culture and club culture; otherwise known as future music culture. Production will stop as soon as electronic music evolves into something different, something new. In the meantime, we have developed a series of micro-documentaries about some of the people and places we've observed. The series is called PANTON X and it can be seen in websites around the world.

We've put two of the PANTON X micro-documentaries here for you to watch. You will need QuickTime 5.02 or later or RealPlayer (they're both free) to watch these videos.

Download Quicktime 5 For Free!

Bandwidth a concern? We've engineered these videos to check your RealPlayer or QuickTime Player preferences to determine which version (low , medium or high bandwidth) of each movie to download for you. These preferences are totally independent of the actual type of connection you're using, so it would benefit you, if you don't know what your QuickTime or RealPlayer settings are, to go back and double-check. Our "low bandwidth" version goes out to 14.4 modems through to 56K modems. Our "medium bandwidth" version goes out to 112K Dual ISDN connections. Our "high bandwidth" version is aimed at Cable connections, T1 connections, and (ooooh, we're jealous) higher connections.

Basque Reaction

The Basque, if one thing can be said about them, it's that they sure know how to party. Forget about style. Fashion? Never heard of it. Dance cool? Why bother! The Basque, when they go out, it's for one thing... to party their asses off, plain and simple! At two in the morning, when most of us are ready to call it a night, they're just getting warmed up, and with headline acts that only start spinning at seven in the morning, producing this episode of PANTON X was an exercise in exhaustion. Virtually oblivious of all the glowing decorations, the funky dance troupes and even the world-class DJs, everyone at these parties that of throws keeps it real. They keep it so real that they don't even KNOW they're keepin' it real! They're not there to "see and be seen." They don't care if they look cool or not in their white surf t-shirts. They're there to have fun, whether you like it or not! The walls are literally dripping with sweat from all those bodies dancing 'til the break o' day. Isn't that the way it should be all the time?

So, if you ever find yourself in the Basque Country, amid those rolling green hills dotted with bleeting sheep and solid white homes with slanted red roofs, with the Atlantic Ocean to one side of you and the Pyrenees on the other, and you find your evenings a little too calm, too often, drop a line and find out when his next party's going down. Just remember, the doors may open at ten, but don't get there until two!

L.A. Jungle

Is L.A. the city of the future? Raymond Roker thinks it is. He should know. Roker's been part of the L.A. scene for over a decade. He's been there since the beginning, some would say. With his magazine URB and his weekly club, Science, Roker continues to shape the face of West Coast future music culture. Focusing on L.A's Jungle Music scene and Science, this episode of PANTON X is a look at an L.A. subculture as well as one man's perception of L.A. So, what do you think? IS L.A. THE city of the future?

Hawai'i Raves (America's Ibiza?)

Hawai'i's premier rave and club promoter, G-Spot, put Hawai'i on the map by bringing Carl Cox to spin at the 1999/2000 New Year's rave in Honolulu. Small and secluded, cut off from the rest of the world, living in a limbo somewhere between a tropical paradise and an urban jungle, Hawaiian ravers seem to enjoy themselves. Check it out and decide for yourself.
